UIL OAP (University Interscholastic League One-Act Play) Competition falls under the same academic and extracurricular guidelines as any other UIL athletic or academic event in the state. During the UIL One-Act Play contest, Texas schools present an 18-40 minute play adjudicated by a single judge, or a panel of judges, with the judge/s awarding individual acting awards, as well as selecting advancing plays.  The contests are typically held on a single day, and open to the public. There are Zone, District, Bi-District, Area, Regional and State levels of competition, but only 6 schools from each conference (1A-6A) ultimately make it to the State level.

The League's theatre program is considered by historians to be the foundation of educational and community theatre in Texas. In fact, the League’s theatre contests together comprise the largest organized theatre competition in the entire world, with over 700 schools competing just this past year.  The program continues to be a major factor motivating increasing numbers of schools to offer theatre arts as an academic subject.
